Title: Newbie starts his resto
Post by: Robmkx on April 25, 2014, 04:41:34 PM
Hya,
I must confess I've always been a Holden man. Until now. Long story short I've hit very hard times and sold off all my old holden stuff and my project cars. Luckilly I was bequethed a mk2 Cortina by an old familly friend so I have something to play with. I drove it around for a year or so and then it's been in storage for about 6 months. So I've started pulling it apart to give it a full respray, after it's rust is repaired. I've gotten so far except I can't for the life of me figure out how the dash indicator lights remove from the dashboard? I'm new to the forum so I'm looking forwards to getting into the Ford side of things....so Hi!

Fair enough. After the Mk1 forum closed down I'm finding hard to locate other mk2 owners for advice. I'll keep checking back :)

Welcome! Post some pics and start a thread! I've been busy and I haven't posted for a while on my TE wags thread or any where else. That will change soon. ;)

Looks like a good start, interiors a great colour....
Are you welding it yourself? I kinda miss that part of my project now it's all done...
Cheers Drew.........

Well unfortunately I can't weld so I have the option of a) having a go or b) waiting until my friend who is a panel beater can get here....but he lives about 500k away! I managed to get a NOS door for the worst one so I'm thinking I'll let my mate decide. I've stripped the car down and started sanding it back, which is a REAL PIA especially the bonnet where theres crazy cracks under the paint so it's all gotta come off. Thinking of going a brighter orange like Atomic Orange or Tiger Mica...

I was in the same position, hadn't welded before, but had a mate that could but worked away so he taught me the basics and I went from there..... Six months of work and a few burns from hot metal in my sleaves and boots it was all done... Great feeling though and I've a couple of new scars, hehe......
Either way keep up the good work, Drew.....

Well the bonnet is finally in bare metal. Well the skin anyway. What a prick of a job that is!! Only taking the bonnet and boot back to metal due to crazy cracks painted over at some stage. Rest of it will hopefully be easier. I'm new to bodywok in general so I'm trying to go slow and stuff as little as possible (as I know my perfectionist mate who'll do the panel beating will have a chop at my lack of skills lol).  Can't decide wether to keep it original or go more modern both with paint and powerplant... Thoughts?

Go to the next car show and talk to some owners, then try to put yourself in their position, it may help. I know I like both modded and original, I like how clunky and ancient my old mans HD premier wags is, and I like the concept behind the modded and modernised cars too!

As for your earlier question about posting pics from your photobucket:

In here- "http://s295.photobucket.com/user/The_Zephyr_Project/library/?sort=3&page=1"

Click on the image you want to post, then copy the direct address and paste it here between the [ img ] and the tags.

without the space between the "G" and the "]" in the and the it looks like this:

Yeah it's hard to know. My holdens were all 70's cars 'modded' but with period stuff...so yes, clunky lol. A big part of me wants bright paint and a 3.5 rover v8 under the hood....  >:D

So I've sanded the boot and bonnet back to bare metal. Roof is next. Side could get away with a light sand methinks. Been chatting to a bloke in the UK with a v8 Mk2...I think it's a lot of effort compared to restoring my mk2 to original, selling it and then buying a v8 platformed car....!

Well how time change. Back on the v8 conversion warpath now. I've read the vsb14 and under LA2 I reckon I can squeeze a rover 3.5 in there. Have spoken to an engineer about it and he thinks it'll be ok. His work is more converting cars for handicapped use but he is very nice and friendly, knowledgeable and has a side business in building Rally cars, so I think that will work well. So far, so good. I'm picking up a 3.5 in bits and a BW65 box this week so It'll be time to lift out the kent and start seeing how much stuff has to be moved to fit. NOT CUTTING yet though!! I have to wait for the green light from 'the man' 1st.
