Title: Brakes and booster in a MK 1 cortina
Post by: wazzab4 on September 15, 2007, 05:17:47 PM
Hi all warren is my name 1st real post here and not my last.

Anyway i have a MK1 cortina and it has a brake booster in it but is not hooked up. I was told it was out of a GT but not 100% sure.

Now the brakes feel realy soft like then need a brake bleed but i have never owned a car before with out vacuum assated brakes so i am unsure.

So my question is  should i try and work out how to hook up this brake booster and see if it makes any differcent at all.
Or does this model car normal stop ok if the brakes a bleed correctly.

Any help or pics of how it should be hooked up or info on what i should do would help.

I plain on keeping this car and puting a bigger motor in it to at a later stage. So i also have also thought of a brake upgrade all round to so if you have any info on a brake upgarde on this car i would like to hear from you and see pics also.

Thank you heaps

Is the booster a seperate external one with ots own master cylinder Or is it just a booster between the pedal and master cylinder?

If it is just abooster between the pedal and master cylinder then you just need to connect engine vacuum to it from the inlet manifold somewhere.

It if is a remote booster and master cylinder you need to connect the hydraulic lines up as well.  I would ne some photos or somwething to help you there.

This pic is of the engine bay the red circle is the barke booster and the yellow circle is the reservoir then are not connected in any way.

And the brake booster is not connected to the motor so no vacuum there yet.

Yeah that is a remote mater cylinder and booster.

It is all there, that booster and master will only do your front brakes though.  You will need a line from the master cylinder for the front brakes across to the remote master cylinder then from there it will split off to the two front brake calipers.

It is hard to explain which port on the master is whcih but looking at the condition of it and knowing it has been sitting disconnected for a while I would take it to a brake shop and get them to rikit it anyway.  A kit should;t be to expensive.  They will soon tell you which ports are which.

Kits for those maters on the firewall are dirt cheap so get them done also.  Kits are about $20 each these days, you can strip them and clean them out with brake cleaner really easily yourself then check the bores and refit the new rubbers.  If the bores are scopred badly thewn get a sleeve fitted.  Laste mast I had sleeved cost me $60 to have done.
