Hello,
I contacted Burton Power in the UK and they advised me that they could supply a Vented front Capri Disc and an M16 front caliper spacer kit to suit the wider vented disc. They said it was a direct bolt on and no mods are needed. As you can see from my pictures the disc is not even close and the caliper is not an M16 so the spacer kit does not fit either.
I contacted burtons and they tell me that obviously I do not have a TC or TD' MK3 Cortina upright disc or caliper in my car, however I pulled the front end from a TC Cortina myself.
Is there any variation between models or years and is the English MK3? different to the Australian TC or TD.
Cheers

as per the other post the very first of the tc's had a different stub axle or upright as the poms called them, later tc's and td's had the same stub axles. not sure how they do it but i wouldnt think just on gap size alone that a vented rotor is going to fit into a std cortina caliper.
what is a m16 caliper?
-
Burtons told me that all MK3, 4 & 5 Cortinas have an M16 Caliper which is what is on my Escort, so they sold me an M16 caliper spacer kit which goes between the two halves of the caliper and makes it wider, I have this on my escort with vented disc's and it works great.
Where do I get the later style stub axle and wheel hub so I could use the disc's they have supplied?
Here is a picture of what I think I need. this is from a post in the UK and uses the same disc and a M16 caliper.
-
ahh i see how the spacer works. i had it in my head it was an adaptor plate of sorts.
-
So will the aftermarket alloy MK3 Cortina hub fit onto my TC stub axle?
-
i went and had a look at the gear i have. of about 10 front ends they all look the same as the first photo you posted except for 1. this is a series 1 imprted tc and the front end is still in the car and has the wheels on it. looking thru the wheels i think i can see the bolts that hold the hub to the disc which i wouldnt normally be able to see in the later type. i'll take the wheel off and have a better stickybeak on the weekend.
-
BigNorm,
That would be great.
Cheers
-
ok, i took the wheel off and i think this is the arrangement you want. i remember seeing granada vented discs on these stub axles. im not sure what makes them different to the later hub setups.
any flat-firewalled tc in australia will run this hub type setup.
-
That's what I am after, do you want to sell the hubs and the calipers?
Please, Please, Please, Please.
-
yeah i do but they're on a running driving car. i havent decided what i'm doing with the car yet but i'm not in a position to disable it just yet as i need to move it in and out to get another car in and out. you're also going to need the upper control arms which would mean lowering the k frame so its not a 5 minute exercise.
how much of a hurry are you in?
-
I am in no hurry, are the upper control arms different to what I have? or do I need the upright and stub axle as well?
-
you will need the whole lot. i've never pulled them apart and sat them side by side to compare the differences but i know the upper control arms were different on the early tc's. it must be to match these stub axles and i know trhese are different as you've found, the later stub axles dont take the english vented brake upgrade.
-
Just a check that may not be too hard, will the early front hub and disc push onto and fit up on a later TC stub axle, I am just wondering if the stub axles are the same but later in Australia they went to a different hub and disc because we sold 6 cylinder engines?
Cheers

Norm,
Below are some pictures of my TC front suspension. The measurement between the upper mounting flanges is 687mm and the measurement between the lower control arm bolt centres is 630mm.
Can you please tell me if a TE or TF Cortina front suspension has the same types of mounts and is the same measurements?
Cheers
-
You realize the Te/f x member is welded in.
-
No I didn't know that, so that solves that problem. Now I just need to know if a TE or TF front hub and disc will fit onto a TC or TD front stub axle?
Cheers
-
early tc's were a direct copy as such and were probably imported from england. late 72 the tc changed to the australian design which other than a few small differences in suspension carried right up to the end of the td. for the sake of clarity i'll call the early stuff tc and the later td.
in regards to the k frame. they're different. the early tc's had a narrower chassis rail at the engine bay and was only double skinned whereas the australian version was triple skinned. thats an australian frame you have in that photo. i've never put a tape measure to either frame but i know an early frame doesnt fit into a later car. if you're rough you can go the other way though.
sorry to burst your bubble but an early tc and td hubs are not interchangable. without taking it apart they have different wheel bearings for one and as you've already discovered the early brake upgrade doesnt fit onto a td stub axle.
is there any reason you've got your heart set on this style of brake setup? is it for a cortina or a kit car? what sized wheels are you going to be running?
-
It is for a kit car and the chassis must take a TC cross member, just didn't want to pay for a hoppers stoppers kit as vented disc's and spaced calipers work just the same.
Where about are you so I can think about postage costs for the front end parts.
Cheers
-
ahh yeah ok no worries. that makes sense. i've sold heaps of front ends over the years to jba and westfield crew.
i'm in perth.
-
Norm,
I am definitely keen on the early front end bits, maybe just easier to take the complete front end?
-
whole front end isnt a problem. i can do both types or whatever bits you need depending on what the specs are for your car.
whereabouts are you?
-
I am in Kallaroo, just let me know how much you want for the entire front end? Or just the uprights, top wish bones and hubs?
What suburb are you in?
Cheers
-
haha i'm right up the other end, gosnells. still its better than postage/freight. i'd prefer to sell the whole front end complete as i'd be stuck with it otherwise if i strip it for a few bits. how does $250 disc to disc grab you?
-
Norm was that $200 :) I can pick it up anytime you are ready or even give you a hand to remove it?
Cheers
-
maybe i should've started at $300.
as i said before i need to make room to park this car so i can strip as where its parked now its in the way of other things and needs to stay driving. what kind of a hurry are you in?
might be easier to give me a call. 0407772723

No hurry at all, but definitely want it and $250 is no problem at all :)
