Title: Ethanol blended fuels
Post by: Admin on July 26, 2006, 10:37:59 PM
Hey all.
I use a recently released fuel from Shell, Optimax Extreme, 100% octane, using 5% ethanol blend. Well recently my corty shitbox has developed an engine miss, which slowly got worse. Its not always present, but sometimes worse than others.
I always assumed it was the dizzy cause its farked, but recently replaced the dizzy with a nice tight unit no play in the shaft etc.
The miss is still there.
Running ethanol blended fuel makes my holley, fuel bowl get condensation on the outside and is cool to touch. I assume that its also creating condensation/water on the inside of the fuel bowl. Ahh not good. :|
I''m starting to think Ethanol Blended fuels are not suitable for a carby motor.
I dunno, what u think?
My mate has the same problem on a nissan FJ20 but he uses a cheap shit fuel with 10% ethanol mix, hes got the same engine miss and has spent money to fix it and its still there.

I told all this to my mechanic when i dropped the corty of to him today cause i cant fix it, and its pissing me off. He laughed and quoted some european country, running 85% ethanol and 15%fossil fuels. Apparently they been using it since 1979.

Anyway, I''m after comments on Etanol Blended Fuels.

Yeah CortinaD,
Checked the leads with multimeter, all had resistance within spec.
Somebody else said change them anyway.
Get it back next week.

running a high octane fuel in theory is designed for the higher end of the market engines with much higher compression or boost. it is a much more controlled, faster, colder burning fuel. if u run it on an engine which wasnt designed for the fuel it''ll give u all the symptoms of engine which is retarded and create carbon, blow smoke, foul your plugs etc etc which any one of those will cause a miss.

advance your timing up. experiment with it. running 100 octane fuel u could probably squeeze 20-25 degrees out of it before it pings.

a good example is pc''s civic. now there''s a vehicle designed purely with performance in mind and he said it runs well on the stuff.
