Title: What gearbox?
Post by: Vince on February 16, 2009, 01:58:12 PM
Hi guys,
I'm just about to put an XF injected 250 Turbo motor in my TD 3.3 Auto. The XF motor has a 4 speed manual BW box, I want to go with manual but want a 5 speed. Running about 350hp (for road use only) what 5 speed would be an easy conversion, cost effective and survive with this combo.
Should I stick with the 4 Speed?
Any help will be appreciated

there isnt a cost-effective gearbox which will handle 350hp thru overdrive. the single rail wont last either. a toploader will handle the hp but doesnt have overdrive. otherwise u might need to up your budget.

ok, what should I up the budget to?
Has anyone tried fitting the Sierra cosworth 5 Speed to a crossflow? Externally they look the same as the BW-T50D used in some of the later XF's (so the gregory's manual says). I used one in my MK1 Escort drag car behind a 450hp Cosworth engine I did break it but only once I got to using the nitrous. Broke the engine a few times as well. I can get my hands on a Cosworth gearbox from UK but don't know if I can get it to fit.

You can get a T5 from Redline Auto that has had the standard gears replaced. Last time i looked into it they wanted $2500 for one.

i doubt a sierra box would handle the torque of a  turbo 250.  if its the same as an xf box then it definitely wont cos they were shit.

Here's what Burton's in Uk say about the Cosworth Box.

   Borg Warner T5 Gearbox
5 speed HD Borg Warner box with all alloy casing.
One of the strongest boxes fitted to a production European Ford car -  it originated from the American Mustang.
1” x 23 spline input shaft.
Fitted in Sierra/Sapphire Cosworth 2wd
Oil capacity 2.55 litres.
Standard oil grade ATF.

this is probably abit late but a T5 will handle the power from most facons they are a good 5 speed i know of a few running in later model falcons running a over 350hp at the wheels and havnt had any problems with the box just the borg warner diff dosent like the power
