Hey peeps,
after 5 years of looking for a cortina project I finally have one! I got a td wagon dirt cheap as it has no engine with it, but i have a 250xflow sitting in a rust bucket xf ute in my yard that I'm gonna put in it. I also got the sump, oil pickup and engine mounts with the car so it should be straight forward. I plan to rebuild the engine but have never done one before, so any suggestions in regards to cam etc would be mighty helpful. I plan to do the cam and get an aussiespeed holley manifold etc. A top loader would be great too. Ill put up some pics tomorrow, it has a little cancer that I need to cut out but its str8 as.
Cheers, Dave.

Sweet as, haven't seen a wagon on the road in ages..... looks good, the rust shouldn't be to hard to fix, is it just the sills? and is the old ute in the background the motor donor?
Good luck with it...................

Think you pressed the D by mistake there cos that should be an E.
Here's a link to show you all the different cortina models.

lol I thought it was a td  my bad.
Theres a little rust spot in the floor and a decent one infront of the windscreen on the right hand side also. and yea the ute is the donor vehicle, i was going to fix it up but the lh winscreen pillar is rusted out  cheers for the replys guys, I will keep posting as the project progresses.
Cheers, Dave.
-
Hopefully thats all the rust thats in that ol corty of yours cos one of mine is rusting up a bit only cos sections are bare metall and i thought i'd have it in primer by now. Maybe not far down the track i'll have primer on it and then paint not long after that.
If you wanna know what year model your corty is and other info have a look on the compliance plate.
-
I did m8, its a 1980 model.
-
Cool I have a 1980 TE sedan built in March.
-
killa, mine was made in june. Have you restored yours??
-
:banghead: I found some rust in the chassis! :banghead:
Have a looksy...
Is it fixable? Ill be shattered if its not... Ill have to wait another 5 years to bloody find one
Cheers, Dave.
-
I got the falcon engine out today, heres a pic..
I just need to get my longreach going and out of the shed so I can start on the bodywork. I plan to do a cut and shut with that rusty chassis rail.
Cheers, Dave.
-
Mine isn't restored yet but i will be doing something to it sometime in the future. As for chassis rust i'm not sure if its repairable but i do know its the worst place to get rust imo. Better off asking someone on here that knows more about that kind of thing i'm only just learning about things to do with cars so sorry i can't be more help to you with that. If you do have to look for another corty don't get rid of the one you have cos parts come in handy when you need them most.
What are your plans for the engine?
-
I'm tossing up between a 4brl holley or fuel injection at the moment.. other than that im gonna do the cam, a little head work, a freshen up (rings bearings etc.) I have some genie extractors for it and wanna look into getting a 4speed top loader. Wouldn't mind looking into forced induction as well a little down the track. This is my first build so Im open to any advice / suggestions.
Cheers, Dave.
-
Well i'm not very handy with advice or suggestions at the moment cos i'm actually very new to car builds/repairs. if you go on one of the other forums you will definitely get a better answer.
-
I'm in the process of hiding the engine bay wiring at the moment, just wondering if I weld a peice around here... (http://i1009.photobucket.com/albums/af214/davius1987/IMG_1396-1.jpg)
would there still be enough clearance for the trans? I'm going to relocate the battery to the back and hide as much wiring as I can.
Cheers, Dave.
-
bump :bs: tumbleweed blow by lol
-
what do you mean 'weld a piece around here?' where do you want to weld the piece?
-
in the pic theres a black strip of metal clamped to the firewall where the loom runs. I would like to weld that strip in to hide the wiring.
-
lol i looked at that pic a few times and didnt see it. yeah the trans and everything else will fit around it no worries.
-
sweet as. cheers man
-
thought id let yous know.. work on the ol corty is on hold at the moment due to lack of funds. I'm also losing inspiration more and more with all the rust I've found :( dunno what I'm going to do with it yet... might end up at the scrap yard so I can start looking for a better shell. I was even thinking about jamming the motor into the mark 2 escort coupe shell my mate has, just for a burnout comp car. at least that isn't bloody rusted out lol
Cheers, Dave.
-
Sorry to hear that Dave :( In my opinion she was too far gone but I have also seen cars in alot worse condition be fixed, so I tend to keep my mouth shut! lol Hopefully you can find another one, I'll keep my eyes and ears open for you and when I find something Ill post a link up here for ya. I'm in Two wells so us S.A Cortina guys have to stick together! 8)
Good luck with whatever you decide
Andrew
-
Cheers buddy :D
Its a shame but i think she'll end up just being a burnout pig for now.. Thinking about getting her going and changing a few things and taking it to the burnout comp in all its rusty glory lol I would have preferred to restore it but realistically it would have been too much work. Ill be sure to post some burnout vids when i get the old girl fired up.
Cheers, Dave.
-
Its now a ute 8) Ill upload some pics soon. it looks pretty good
Cheers, Dave
-
A ute!!! look forward to seeing pics of this one lol  8)
-
The burnout ute...
I'm going to use the original back windscreen, and just make up a frame for it and weld it in. I'm also going to weld up the back doors and bog over where the handles where. Too bad it won't be registerable like this... I reckon itd turn some heads on the street lol
Cheers, Dave.
-
Good work mate, bloody good work im sure a few people at the burnouts will be lookin twice, scratching their heads and looking for the owner to ask questions when they see a cortina ute droppin mad burnouts!! dont give up on her!!
-
i won't m8, this ute thing has restored my love for the old girl... She'll be chuckn ringies in no time now.
Cheers, Dave.
-
I like it! 8)
Keep up the good work! if it can't be restored and put back on the road, you might as well have some fun with it lol. Will keep an eye out for this one at Speedway city!
-
shame u cant get a hold of a couple of coupe doors and shift the pillers back.
-
I've done some further weight reduction.. I chopped out the guts of the rear doors and the spare tyre compartment.. now I have to concentrate on the rear windscreen surround and the tray floor. I've also made a tailgate for the beast from the wagon tailgate, I just need to go buy some light c channel of the rite size and weld it around the tray and across the top of the tailgate to cover the holes from the pillars I chopped and to enclose the top of the tailgate.
Cheers, Dave.
-
I dropped the motor in 2day so I could get all of the wiring sorted out..
and thought I'd take some pics of the weight reduction so far....
Cheers, Dave.
-
Hey buddy so did you get all the wiring done or what??
U still gonna paint that engine bay??
is ur drivers side seatbelt frayed and do u want it if its not?
-
I got most of the wiring done man, I still have to extend the positive terminal to the back where I'm going 2 mount the battery and a couple of plugs need to be done. yea I'm still gonna paint it, I should have some jet black paint left over from my bike once I've finished it so Ill probably just slap on a few coats of that. and thanks but I'm not gonna to need that seatbelt, I plan on putting harnesses in.
Cheers, Dave.
-
Good work dude!
Always good to see progress shots. I guess you have a sump and oil pickup from a Cortina then? I wondered that when I saw the Engine on the stand as there different from Cortina / falcon.
Do you need ny parts for it? like bumpers or lights r anything? there a couple of people wrecking te's in Adelaide right at the moment but there both sedans. Also there is a te wagon at u-pull-it Elizabeth at the moment but it's starting to get to the end of it's life there so if you wanted / needed anything that's wagon specific you would want to do something soon.
Can't wait to see this thing melting a pair of rear tyres on the pad :D
-
cheers dude, yea I have the cortina sump and oil pickup, I also have to put in an electric fuel pump and some cortina extractors as the xf ones where in the way of the cortina mounts.
I am chasing a few parts for it.. I need a radiator, headlights, grill and possibly a front bumper. some rust free front quater panels would help too lol
Cheers, Dave.
-
ok.. I know the progress has been slow but Im getting there lol I just havn't had much cash or time lately.
I have put in the rear windscreen surround, welded up the back doors and stripped the dash butt naked. I also had to make up a frame to strengthen up around the back windscreen and stop it from twisting when I jack it up from one side. I was hoping to have it finished before gazzanats this year but its not looking good... I might just have to aim for the cortina nationals next year. once the bodys done Ill be looking at working and possibly turbo charging the engine and I could use all the help I can get with it as I havn't built an engine before and quite frankly I don't know sh*t about engine internals.
Cheers, Dave.
p.s. Ill upload progress shots when I get the beast out of the shed next time.
-
I found this little beast a couple of months back.. dirt cheap too!
So the ute is gone :norm:
The new one has bugger all rust and its straight except for the drivers side door, the only down fall is its a 2ltr. Not for long though, im taking it off the road tomorrow so i can start working on the ol girl. I have everything for the 250 conversion except the trans cross member and the tail shaft. I may need a diff centre too. Hopefully this one doesn't have any hidden surprises....
Cheers, Dave.
-
Hey Dave,
Glad to see you found yourself a nice tidy Cortina. She looke like a VERY solid starting point for you. Bit sad to hear about the ute :( would have been awesome to see a ute murdering a pair of tyres on the pad.
As for the gearbox crossmember I'm not 100% but I think you have to cut one out of a 6cyl Cortina and weld in. There is a neat TF Cortina sedan down at u-pull-it Elizabeth that had a 200 crossflow engine, but it's been there a while, would say the gearbox mount would still be there though. It would pay to grab the diff out of it too and probably the tailshaft as they are different from 4 to 6.
Hope this helps you a bit.
-
What have you done to the "ute"?
-
Cheers xle, but I took the trans crossmember and diff from the ute before i scrapped it but apparenty the 4cyl crossmember mounts in a different spot so Id have to get a custom one made up or weld some brackets to the chassis rail in the right position for the 6.
-
got the engine out over the weekend and today i pulled the heater box and that out and found hidden surprise #1...
should be pretty easy to fix though luckily.
Cheers, Dave.
-
Should'a stuck with the ute!
-
ahh you'll bve right small job ay, u can weld cant you dave?
-
quick!!! put the heater box back in!!!
-
Should'a stuck with the ute!
the ute was waaaaay worse lol
ahh you'll bve right small job ay, u can weld cant you dave?
yea my welds aren't pretty but nothing a grinder cant fix
quick!!! put the heater box back in!!!
hahaha that was my first thought
-
i had a pos wreck a few years back where i pulled the heater box out and the firewall was rubber lined. i thought thats different never seen that before. it had rust like yours underneath and what they'd done was sikaflex a tyre tube over the top. voila rust fixed.
-
yea this one had the rubber lining too, im just gonna cut the rust out though. It'll be good welding practice lol
-
so I got off my ass over the long weekend...
behind the heater box is nearly done,
(http://i1009.photobucket.com/albums/af214/davius1987/IMG_2144.jpg)
the new nose cone is on now,
(http://i1009.photobucket.com/albums/af214/davius1987/IMG_2142.jpg)
I also put the 6cyl diff in and cut out the old cross member brackets and started a bit of a fire
so its getting there slowly
Cheers, Dave.
-
thats the way!!
above the heater hole is a little gutter rail, dont forget to put that back in, it stops rain water that comes thru the plenum grille and runs in thru the hole.
-
cheers buddy, i also put the woodgrain td dash parts in that i got from you. looks pretty good.
-
Coming along since i seen it.
-
those roof racks are ready for you if you still want them xle_freak
-
just a quick update, ive made the little gutter up and tacked it in behind the heater box, It just needs a little bog to finish off then a lick of paint. I also got those ugly ass roof racks off and put some 6cyl king springs in the front. next mission will be the cross member mounts and a little cancer removal in the floor.
