Awesome thread & progress, keep up the great work. Damn i gotta learn how to weld......

It's a holiday, so I've been working at 1:5 can/minutes and amount of work has been quite minimal... Now at least there is heaps of room for the 4L!
And the turbo flange is done- picked it up friday...
Might do a little more prep work on the motor but I'm getting to the CBF stage of the day...
-
Boo-YA! Ready for tomorrow!!!

Looks like something from Tron! :D
Bolted in, not yet welded onto rail. It clears where the leg of the driver would be, but it seems very big... I might gusset it from the bottom and remove the upper beam... hmmmm
(http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01167.jpg)
-
sweeet, but where u gonna sit?
-
Uncomfortably, on the seat... It is actually out of the way, but I'm going to trim it down anyway. :P
-
oh yeah fairy enough. in the photo it looks to me like its where your left leg would be. least you know it'll never fall out :)
-
Got the rotors on the 'Tina, and then the BA 16" wheels. It looks rediculous!
So I stuck the old school scoop on it for lols...
:P
-
The early commo brakes I had to fit for the conversion to 5 stud wouldn't work, so I had to resort to BA falcon 2 piston. :P
Such a shame- LOL
Will get pics after i get the mounts made and all is installed!
-
I got stuck into the floor fan this arvo, and knocked most of it on the head...
Just have to finish the welding off and then I'll be hitting the trans tunnel.
-
Floor welded down... moment of truth!
ROCK SOLID!!!
-
how do you get ba disc's and callipers on them stubs?
-
Must be about time for an update? especially with the easter 5 day break we just had :D
Loving this thread.
-
I've had a few set backs, it hasn't changed since the last post... :( Someone jumped the fence and flogged my BA calipers, I was sick for 2 weeks and after that I had legal issues that required I went to meeting after meeting in the city- which required me staying in Adelaide. I gotta get a wiggle on, or it wont get done....
-
I pretty much finished off the passenger side floorpan today. Might have a go at getting the trans tunnel out of the donor car tomorrow.
-
Decided to concentrate on structural repair instead (I don't want it coming back like a dog with a thorn in its front paw) and yay....
Crap.
At least the seat mount is now done :P
(http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01222.jpg)
-
Just a little more then I'll be closing it up :D
(http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01229.jpg)
Trying to hurry it along...
-
Damn that's some scary rust! :bullshitazza
It's funny you look at the very first photos of it doesn't look too bad overall for rust, but damn!!
I'm really in awe, most people would have walked away, but your sticking with it. You're not only fixing it but doing a damn fine job of it too.
I see your in Adelaide, if you ever feel like meeting another Cortina tradgic let me know.
I wish you all the best with it, and look forward to the updates :D
-
Yeah, I already have it, and it doesn't cost much to keep plugging away at it myself... but if I was paying someone else- I could've bought a finished one! LOL
Anyway...
I won some things on eBay!!
$190 all up, but they're for an R33... I'll make them fit! LOL
-
I attacked the inner A pillar this arvo...

A mate of mine is helping me out with chopping the falcon up tomorrow! :D
-
My mate Grills came around and we got a fair bit done today...
He owns this FJ he built himself, won a few trophies with it!

Bit more work to be done on it tomorrow. Hopefully we make it in time!
-
We worked on the trans tunnel again today, it's spotted in tight, just have to clean up around it a little. Also got the intercooler in! :D
(http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01254.jpg)
I'll show the wall and tunnel when its done tomoz... :P
-
getting there keep up the photos
-
cool, coming along great
-
I promised the machinist I would get the manifold to him to face when I came to pick up the finished tailshaft... That's thursday, so I had to get a move on it! HAHA!
So I cut all the bends up, cleaned the surface of the manifold flange and got to welding it up. Bear in mind this is the first manifold I've made that wasn't a slap together job for a complete and utter shitbox.... (waiting for corrections) :P
(http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01255.jpg)
I cut out the old battery tray and I'm mounting it in that vicinity...
Might need modifications here and there in the end, but I have to get in close-ish... Might come up short in the bended pipe department...
-
A progress shot on the manifold... Trying to leave space for the turbo and passage for the dump pipe makes for lots of head scratching...
-
Hi Tils,
Where do you find time to eat, sleep and have a crap...lol
:drive:
Bucster
-
I only do a couple of hours every day except sunday, where I go to the regular family dinner... lol.
Manifold is almost done.
-
My manifold is off being machined at present, so finishing off the repairs on the body, then the electrics. :D
(http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01266.jpg)
-
So I finished the A-pillar, only have the plenum and firewall patching left. :D
(http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01272.jpg)
-
Gee Tils,
Your turning into a bit off a legend with this build up, keep up the good work,
Bucster
-
bloody good work tils, any plans on taking her down 2 the nationals next year?
-
See what happens. Hopefully it doesn't go pop!!!
-
Thanks for the complements, too!
Nearly done with the plenum now...
-
Got bored at night, I'm seriously crap at photoshop. but I had a go anyway! :P
(http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/junk/cortinashit.jpg)
What do you rekon? lol
-
Rust is done with til after the comp. Now to finish the firewall and get the thing running! :D
(http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01278.jpg)
-
Motor is out, firewall is near completion, exhaust manifold has been machined and tail shaft is done. :)
-
Good work as always! :D
Man your flying along with this.
So, one thing that you havn't shared with us is how you did the sump.
I'm seriously addicted to this thread...
-
Got it all home! Wikid!!
Yeah yah!
-
Hi Tils,
its been a couple days where are ya?
just noticed the cut on the radiator support panel, i did that once, cause i could not get enough height under the house to lift the motor over the panel, so i thought the easiest way was to cut it, oops, boy did i regret that.
Bucster
-
It was something that needed doing for intercooler and radiator mods to be done. It will be re fitted. Easy as.. :P
A fair bit has been done, but I'll post those pics when it's done. ;)
-
Well the trans tunnel is complete, and the majority of the forming has been done for the upper part of the firewall. Should have that all welded in tomorrow morning. Then I will complete the radiator and intercooler mounts...
Pics...
-
awesome, keep it up i wanna see this run
-
Firewall is welded in, Minor patching needs doing still, but nearly to the point where motor goes in to stay.
-
Battery tray made, if I had more time it could've been better...
-
So I had a productive day with the help of my good mate, Bret. :D
Radiator panel is sorted
(http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01308.jpg)
And so is the firewall and battery tray!!
-
Gave the firewall a bit more of a grind, then thought fuck it... leave it for later. So then I gave it a hit with primer to prevent rust and left it at that for now...
Also got the radiator support panel bent up and welded in, drilled some holes for the locators on the VB Commodore radiator and hey presto!
And sitting in there
(http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01314.jpg)
Will sort the top out on monday...
-
u make it look all too easy
-
Thanks man! I love doing this work, so ya kinda get good at it when you can't stop doing it!!
Thought I might just put this here...
:P
-
And then this happened...
.
.
.
.
.
:D

The engineer unfortunately cut the tailshaft too short, so I have to find a tailshaft from another cortina or find one with the same OD tube. It looks like the finishing date is pushed further away. :(
-
The engineer unfortunately cut the tailshaft too short, so I have to find a tailshaft from another cortina or find one with the same OD tube. It looks like the finishing date is pushed further away. :(
cut it 3 times and its still too short?
is it just me or is there only 1 image front of car after the "and then this happened..."
-
whats ya postcode ive got a tailshaft here that will end up in scrap metal
will see what it will cost to freight too you
-
I dug around in the old section of the wreckers shed and managed to find another tailshaft. Lucky!!
I put some things together to see if it all fit, and when I whacked the turbo on I thought, oh crap- clearance issues with the bonnet....
But no!!
Freaking BOOYA!!! LOL
-
That's fantastic!
I had fears of scrolling down the page and seeing a turbo poking through the bonnet :( I like this way much better, or worse case putting a low line scoop on it.
Definitley getting there now
-
wow. just started following this. amazing work mate. Something tells me you're not the average backyarder. Whats your background mate?
-
Hey Tils,
Looking Good,
If you PM me your address and t-shirt size, i will see if there is any promo gear left.
Bucster
:drive:
-
PM sent, and thanks for the offer, Pcman. Luckily I had one stashed at the bottom of a pile of tailshafts!!
You guys wanted to know how I tackled the sump, I have a few pics of it partially tacked up, the engine will have to come out again to seal it all up, also went a bit lower than I would like to, but this was necessary to make up for the limited room and gearbox trusses/exhaust etc...
Oil pickup extension
(http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01345.jpg)
And if you're wondering, I vac tested the setup and there are no leaks. :D
(http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01347.jpg)
Bracing to prevent the weight of the longer pickup from snapping the oil pump off (the weight of the oil in it would make it pretty heavy and a bump would likely at least crack the alloy pump)
As I said it's only tacked in, gotta clean it up and weld it sealed.
Edit: My background is- grew up in my dads mechanics business, got into fabrication of steel and plastics in my early 20's (different jobs).
-
hey is this you?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SiYbLGH15Ts
-
No, LOL! No massive front mount. ;)
-
The Tailshaft has returned! All bolted in.
All the important shapes of the sump have been tacked in place and now the only thing left is to fill the gaps and seal it up!!!
Should be able to make sense of the oil pickup arrangement from all of them... ;)
-
I finished the sump. Now for a lick of paint! :D
(http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01362.jpg)
-
awesome work man, cant wait to see this one finished!
Cheers, Dave.
-
Drain plugs and oil return line all welded in, and now painted up!!
Getting there... slooooowly

Sump is on, engine is going in. Jeeeeesus, what a headfuck...
:P
(http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01372.jpg)
-
So why's that?? it's not like that engine hasn't been in that engine bay before?
what was different this time?
-
It's where it's going to stay until it runs... then if it blows up it might come out again... LOL
-
Bought a boost referenced rising rate and a 100psi 255LPH in tank fuel pump.
El cheapo chinese ebay junk! LOL
-
as long as it works......
i bought one of these regs ages ago. have u worked out what the semi-circle alloy bracket thing is for?
-
It deletes the old vac regulator and goes in its place.
-
Circus-time!
now to polish off the top rad support panel... :D
-
Got the radiator support in...
I'll install the bonnet pins tomorrow, and hopefully get onto the wiring side of things...
-
More NOS goodies!
Mint as boxes too, made me hesitate to open them... for half a second!!! LOL
(http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01411.jpg)

So I started (and finished :P ) the tank mods today so that it would take the factory ford intank pump and sender unit.
Before this happened, I dropped the tank and found out there was at least 2L of fuel still in there! The car has been sitting in the yard for about 15 years!!!
When I got it out it stank like an evil version of turps and was the colour of rusty water... So, of course... I put it in an old drum stuck some old rope in as a wick, and lit it up... as you do.
It was pure death. It stank more as it burned and the smoke was a lovely rich black. :/
Anyway, with that gone I washed the tank out and let it dry in the sun for a few days with a fan being funneled into the sender unit hole.
When I was welding it I had compressed air being forced through the tank to prevent any "unfortunate incidents" LOL
OK. So pics...
The tank after being dried out.
Sender unit flange and cap.
All shaped up with bolts welded on.
Trial fit.
Welded in.
Fitted! :D
(http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01420.jpg)
I'll run the fuel lines soon then whack the tank back in!!!
-
thats piss funny. i always get old fuel and lite it up......as ya do. an old trick we used to do in the "we'll weld that up for ya love" days when nobody got hurt and safety didnt matter.....much unlike today. anyway we used to hook up the fuel tank with a hose to an exhaust pipe and pump exhaust fumes thru it for a couple of hours to nuetralise it. carbon monoxide naturally absorbs hydrocarbons apparrantly.
at the end of the day, if u fuck it up and dont degas it properly you'll never know.
-
So the Enkei 17's off my mates R33 seem to fit well.... :P
(http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01423.jpg)
-
cortys come along way, good work
-
Hi Tils,
Have you settled for a colour yet?
I found a couple promo things for you, i will send them off shortly.
Bucster
-
Thinking a slightly more red version of its current paint...
-
And current cost has come up to $1100, not counting grinding discs and mig wire and gas... lol. So you can manage on a shoestring budget! :P
Also knocked up a tail pipe out of the exhaust off the falcon and some off cuts from the local exhaust shop. 2.25"...
:D
-
The tank is in, like a bought one! LOL
Also finished welding up the tail section for the exhaust. Now it wont be so expensive when the I take it to the exhaust shop. :P
Here are the pics!
Not so pretty but it'll do the job.
-
I spent til lunch sorting the loom out. Damn there's a lot of copper in these cars... :P
(http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01451.jpg)
Now to label it up and install in the 'Tina!
-
So the Enkei 17's off my mates R33 seem to fit well.... :P
(http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC01423.jpg)
tils did you change the studpatten to fit the enkeis????
-
tils did you change the studpatten to fit the enkeis????
Yeah, there is a thread on this site about how to upgrade brakes and change stud pattern to ford 5 stud.
Well I started fitting the wiring into the car and fitted the instrument panel, I'm about 1/3 of the way through it.
I also discovered a very freaky thing about the steering columns of the 2 fords of this project... I'll take some photo's tomorrow for all to see, and what to do... hehehehehe ;)
-
As promised...
This discovery of mine: Turns out the telescoping sections are virtually the same between the TE Cortina and the EF Falcon...
So I did a little switcharoo. ;) Top of the falcon shaft with the lower section of the Cortina...
Put in...
I then cut the steering shaft tube mounts off the cortina (I welded a rod across to save the hassle of aligning it later) and the adjustable mount off the falcon tube and put them together.
I then cut the end off the cortina tube for the bush and dust seal.
Put in place...
And voila! It fits!! Didn't even cut or bend under the dash!!!
See!
Now I have a 1978 Cortina with drivers airbag, and late model switch gear and key!
If you wanted you could just have used an earlier Falcon steering column with no airbag lol.
Looks good don't you rekon, might have to get a black wheel though... :P
-
comming along good tils and fast you must time manage very well, are you going to fit the original dash, crash pad heaters, ect around the ef cluster or morff the ef one in??
-
thats awesome
-
Yeah, you got me thats filth.
:markze:
I think that is something worth detailing for a DYI thread.
Would that be possible ?
Bucster
-
Small update...
Pretty Lights... :D (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dw8cgOZejo)
Sounds funny coming from the Cortina, but no doubt it will end up being as annoying as when it's coming from a Falcon...
SMRTLOCK! I MEAN SMART... lock! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyWaG4-R7GY)

Leaking headgasket replacement underway. I'm rooted... lol

The manifolds are back on. My home made turbo manifold was a freaking pain in the arse to bolt up! Much worse than the intake... LOL
(http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC_1558.jpg)
Not too far off now...
-
nearly there
-
So I had an idea when I saw this old mid 80's shitbox... maybe a stroke of genius, maybe just a post curry cerebral diarrhea... But this up spec tarago has one big moon-roof and immediately I thought- Cortina! So I'm going to chop out the toyotas moon roof and stitch it into the old 'tina!
Here are the pics...
One of these bombs.

Cover opened to reveal a pretty hippy sticker. lol
(http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC_1636.jpg)
Switches... durr lol
Well there you have it! Hope it works...
-
you are just a little bit insane arnt you ???
good work keep at it :)
-
That will look grate,
i put a falcon eb sunroof in my corty,it was only held in with a two piece frame riveted together, then the sunroof was screwed to the frame
:D easy as
-
Put the Beer fridge and Barbecue in and its done
-
Put the master and booster in, and finally got around to picking up another BA caliper.
I have to extend the fuel pump pickup mount, or it wont pull fuel below half a tank...
Now I can almost smell the tina's exhaust fumes, I would have to make a week long trip into the city. At least it wont be too wasted, since I'll be picking up a not so rusty roof rack to keep the sleeper theme going. :P
Anyway picaroonies...
Sitting pretty.
I realised I had pulled all the original wiring out, so I have found some original parts on eBay. I just have to work out how to jerry rig them in...

Lucas- the Lord of darkness! :P

Fuel pump mount and tank level float are done now as well.

It has been hot as fuck around here lately, and with the "festive season" and all, not much has been done...
But I managed to do a little in the past few days...
Turbo and other crap bolted in and WILL stay there this time!
Fuel reg is in aswell... was a real huge job :P

As Promised...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blEQI6MG7bI
-
Awesome!
Sounds tough on idle but I must admit I was a tiny bit dissapointed not to hear the turbo spool up when it had some bigger revs towards the end of the video.
Still. Bloody awesome job mate
-
Drove the Cortina under it's own power today... All of 3 inches! LOL. At least everything is working, it would seem... :D
-
nearly ready for that quater mile pass aye???
-
nearly ready for that quater meter pass aye???
fixed the above post :)
good stuff cant wait too see how it races
-
lol woops
-
Still some ways to go yet...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgNNJuJVjGg
-
Thought we were gunna see a skid!
-
I put the cooling system together and wouldn't you know it... the water pump is fucked. :(
It's absolutely pissing out of the breather hole, much disappoint. It means no skids for now, and I'll have to wait til monday to get a new one...
Oh well, better start working on the brakes... LOL
-
Knocked up a quick (read ugly) template for the brake calipers. The adapter brackets will be done by lunch tomorrow. :D
(http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o44/TilsFZ6/13%20for%201300/DSC_17221.jpg)
slowly slowly... lol
-
Looking good mate, looking back through the thread, i noticed you use a later model falcon instrument cluster for the dash, do they fit? what about the surround facia, or is this another project that needs sorting?
Bucster
-
Fair bit to go before I start worrying about those things! lol
-
Also found what rotor hub to use on this setup. DBA2508:- off Honda Integra.
It is 57.8mm high as opposed to 58.5 off the XA falcon setup (this will only pull the rotor a fraction away from the tie rod end- a good thing), 25mm thick and 23mm minimum- as opposed to 28mm and 26mm thick for the BA. 300mm dia as opposed to 298mm for the BA Falcon, so 1mm extra in the radius- no issue. Centre hole is 64mm as opposed to 71.5 of the BA and 83mm on the XA hat. So I'm assuming this will need machining.
Best thing is it has a P.C.D of 114.3, same as falcon and all the rest! WIN!!!
-
So as you know I've modified the front end to fit a commodore radiator (VC etc) but had to remove a row to allow clearance for the fan. Very time consuming. Wish I had the coin to spring for a custom radiator... lol
(http://sphotos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/528626_10150692165493556_612963555_9230699_1487489505_n.jpg)
Still saving for the BA adapters... so no thrashing for a while yet...
-
remove a row? are you literally taking both tanks off and soldering up each tube?
-
remove a row? are you literally taking both tanks off and soldering up each tube?
Both tanks are off, and that's what I'm doing...
-
Hi Tils,
But arent you defeating the purpose of putting in a bigger radiator, by taking out 1 row?
Bucster
-
Yeah, that's right, but without that deleted row fitting a thermo fan is a bit tight, and I'm hoping there's enough thermal efficiency remaining that the engine wont freak out... I intend on getting a custom ally one made up eventually though.
-
I whacked a tank back on this arvo, there are 3 pinhole leaks that I gotta sort but other than that it's looking good.
-
Picked up a set of 16" SVO rims today. Should look ok on it :D
(http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg198/scaled.php?server=198&filename=sam1211.jpg&res=landing)
-
i think you will find those wheels will be the wrong offset and stick out too far, au / ba or jap wheels are a better cheaper option
-
The car has BA 16"s on it at the moment. They sit too far in...
-
i have a trailer falcon hub from repco and au11 front rotors and calipers , so a different settup on the front , so they could fit on the front but you will have to put a shortened diff in it for them to fit on the rear.
-
the trailer hubs are the same offset as xa falcon i made my own brackets after using xa hub xf rear rotor and hz alloy calipers prev. with crs brackets.
-
I'm going to stretch the guards out the back.
Need to lower it and get lower profile tyres, but I rekon it looks ok...

Hey Tils
What is the old ute spotto sitting beside the corty in the shed?
Bucster
-
That would be a 1972 VH Valiant 318 V8. :)

Brake adapters are in!
So it continues...
-
Finally got my brake adapters all fitted up now. Eventually I'll get 300mm rotors, but that can wait for now.

Now to plumb them in and bleed them up.
-
Couple of pics to show where I am with it right now...

Brakes are all bled up and functioning, and 90º mandrel bent 2¾" exhaust pipe is on order for the dump pipe.
-
I got impatient so I made the most agricultural, ugly but functional dump pipe out of old scrap exhaust for the Cortina today. It will work, so meh.

It's coming up nicely Tils, you've done a good job.
I couldn't see a lot of information on you brake master and booster setup, any chance of some more info? Custom braket? Donor vehicle?
Cheers
-

It's a modified cortina bracket. I've gotta take it all apart again later. I'll take some pics when I do.

-
Any Progress Tils? Missing this thread...
-
Rear main seal shit itself a while back and lost interest for a bit.
I am going to get it to at least have a run or 2 on the track and then I'll decide what I do with it from there.
-
It's on its wheels now, I now have to find time to stick it on the hoist and do the RMS and the myriad of other niggling shit.
