Title: newbi with a TC XLE project
Post by: tc4me on May 23, 2011, 10:38:05 PM
Hi all, I am new to this forum so thought i would show you all my project. I have 73 tc xle 250 2v, 4 speed that i got about 6 months ago from a friend of mine. plans for now are to cut out rust and then paint it in the same green. big brake kit and change to 5 stud. I will put on a set of convo pro's and that is it for the out side. inside will all be redone stock but with some new front seats eg race seats and a sports wheel. then later on i am planning to go silly with it and put a barra turbo 6 auto and 9" and use it for things like power skid and all that. any way here are some pic's of the way i got it and where it is now.

Hi,
Your car is the colour I wanna paint mine. I've just finished all that you have taken photos of. Big Job! Can you tell me what the colour is called please? I think it is Tropicana but I'm not sure. Have fun getting rid of all the rust. :)
Thanks
Shelley

Hi all, and thanks for your kind words. things have been moving along and the car is now at my mates work shop in primer almost ready for paint. I am going down there this saturday to take out the diff so it can be shortened a bit and made into 5 stud so my convo pro's will fit. I will take more pics when i am down there but here is some for now.

Thanks XLE freak.

I am going to keep the 250 2v as is and not put in a barra motor as i had planed to do. This is because i am going to give the corty to my dad as a gift and i know that the 250 will have plent of grunt for him. My dad and i are very close and over the years has spent a lot of time helping me with my projects as he has not had the cash to do one for him self. again he has been helping me with the corty and has no idear that my plan is to give it to him when it is finished. I know how much he loves this car to so i can't wait to see his face when i hand him the keys. one thing is for sure it will not be leaving our family any time soon.

Hay those brakes look familiar, we've meet before. I'm guessing you haven checked if they will bolt up to a TC yet?

Hi Winton. Yes mate they are your old brakes lol. I have had a bit of a go fitting them up but not finished yet. I first tryed the te tf spindles, they bolt up ok but the angle is wrong and so the wheels hang out the gards at the top. So now i will be getting new bearings to fit the tc spindles and match the disc's and hubs. If that don't work then i may have to just get the new one's from hopper stoppers or the ebay one's but have herd mixed reports about them one's...

Yeah i can't wait to see his face. Tryed to get the right size bearings today to fit the brakes from the te tf 5stud upgrade to the tc but it can't be done. so now looks like i have to get a new kit buggaer it...

Are the stub axles on the TC smaller then theTE stub axles?
Is it be possible to put a sleeve onto the TC to match the TE stub axle bearing seats ?

Yeah i looked into it but the guy at CBC bearing didnt think it was a good idear and i don't want to take a chance of that failing on me. would of been great if it worked out but never mind.

"Green is good"
how much do you need to shorten your diff by to fit the convos.?
Title: newbi with a TC XLE project
Post by: tc4me on February 04, 2012, 08:03:47 PM
thanks guy's, to fit the convos it needs to be shortned 50mm each side to fit nice. the housing is no biggy but the axels may be a problem to shortn that much so may need new axels yet.
Title: newbi with a TC XLE project
Post by: winton on February 05, 2012, 10:38:45 AM
Would 25mm a side work? Assuming your sticking with 25 spline you could use pintara axles, cut 10mm out the housing and the offset for the brakes is about 15mm shorter then the corty offset

left axle would be ok as is, right would need 10mm cut off end, shouldn't be a problem, and fit pintara/skyline rear disk brake.

I don't know if this has been dun before but should be easy enough to do.

I have some pintara axle you can have if you want them.
Title: newbi with a TC XLE project
Post by: tc4me on February 05, 2012, 12:48:48 PM
Thanks winton but it has to be 50mm each side to fit the convo's as they are a deep dish. do the pintara axles spline taper off or could i cut them and then respline them. are the axels 4 stud or 5 stud. thanks again for the info.
Title: newbi with a TC XLE project
Post by: winton on February 05, 2012, 02:37:03 PM
They do taper off but there is enough length to cut 50mm off and respline them, being that the offset on the brake end is shorter then the corty one you might not need to cut off 50mm.

You will probably have to fit pintata/skyline rear disk though

They are 4 stud, one stud will line up to the falcon Patten the others will have to be redrilled.

Post by: tc4me on February 05, 2012, 03:55:50 PM
Thanks heaps for that info mate that helps heaps.

Will i need to put the pintara housing ends on to the corty diff housing. or are they the same.

http://www.fordaustraliaforums.com/forum/showthread.php?37261-how-to-build-28-spline-diff-includes-pics
This link shows some stuff you will find useful about fitting the brakes. I've modified some brackets at home myself and it dose work, but if your cutting the diff anyway , it would probably be easier to just weld on the pintara/ skyline ends

This is what the pintara end looks like ,weld them on would save some hassle

No worrys, that why were on here.
The axle pictured is about 20mm to short in the corty housing ( it engages in to the center by only 10mm, when it should engage 30mm),

you would probably only have to cut off about 20mm to achieve the length you need,

axle will still have about 10mm of spline left on the end, don't know if that would be a issue for resplining . ( maby go 60mm shorter if it is, if you can)

The other axle will probably need 40mm cut off, so that will cut the splines off completely

Have you talked to someone about resplining the axles? I have been told in the past they wont be as strong as the were originally, but if its for a cruiser it would probably be ok

I went to see sam at SA RACE today. he likes the idear of using the pintara or r31 setup but said he wants to look into it him self too. He is going to ring me tomorow to let me know if it will work.

He did say that by resplining the axels that they will not be as strong but will be fine for what i intend it to be for.
Title: newbi with a TC XLE project
Post by: tc4me on February 07, 2012, 10:26:05 PM
Ok very happy now lol. sam from SA RACE got back to me to day and it's all go for the r31 set up.

so now need to get compleate r31 diff set up to use.  also it is 5 stud so one less thing to worry about and also it will be a disc brake rear end...
Title: newbi with a TC XLE project
Post by: winton on February 08, 2012, 12:05:22 AM
I'm confused, r31's are 4 stud , same as pintaras, also r31's have a 28 spline axle ,pintara have a 25 spline axle, guess the 28 spline r31 axles could be turned down to 25 spline diameter then resplined ,or are you going to change to a 28 spline center??

Oh, could you post a picture of the housing after its been shortened, I would like to see how they do it,will they just weld a pintara/ r31 skyline end on it, put a sleeve over the housing, or cut it and insert a new end in it. I ask because
I may shorten my own diff and fit two r31 axles, instead of a falcon and a pintara.   I ment skyline r31 now I'm getting confused!!  Hahaha!

Cheers

I picked a ed wagon diff for 140 bucks with brand new rotors and pads. as it has to be shortned by 50mm each side any way, we thought if we use a falcon diff it saves converting it to 5 stud. so then just chop of the axels to the right length and respline them to 25 spline. I will add pics soon.

A mate of mine painted it for me. he had a paint shop years ago untill he split with his wife. So then he was just working for a caryard out near holdens in a little work which is wear he painted mine. But now he is moving to a new work shop of his own in the next week or so. He is a top painter and he will be painting my mustang when its ready...

I said just because you are my dad and this is my way of thanking you for every thing you have done for me.

Absolutely fantastic job mate!

It's a small world, I used to work with your Dad at Woolies about 5 years ago. Real nice bloke, I would always have a chat with him about cars and stuff. I remember him telling me about your Mustang, so your still going with it? I remember him telling me about the number plates ELENOR and seeing your white xr8 getting around with those plates on. I remember alot of our conversations, as I said  a real nice bloke and very deserving of something like this.

Hi low xe, the wheels where on a xy but im not sure on off set but i know i had to shorten the diff by 50mm each side to make them fit. i was'nt to fust about that as i wanted the deep dish look as much as i could with out tubbing. the fronts fit just but i had to put 175's x 60's and evan then they are close to the gards so may have to change them over yet. The next thing to do is front and back suspension but im letting dad do that and once that is done i will get a better veiw of where the wheels sit as it is leaning on one side abit with spring sag.

Lol your not wrong mate. are you the one i was talking to on facebook ?.
Yeah mate i still going with the mustang but not much has been done for a while lol. It's been 9 years i have been building it now so i now need to get back into it. I have made some change's to my plans for it to make my life easyer and a bit cheaper lol so i will be going back to a old school windsor or clevo over the 4.6L cobbra motor i have in it now. I think it will still be at least 2 years away though.

Looking real nice and the story is a tear jerker, i would like to do something fantastic like that for my Dad as well.
Regading your rims, do you know the width, you can usually tell the offset because the are only available in a couple common offsets per rim width.
They look like 3 3/8 backspace, depending if they are 6", 7" or 8"s.
I run same style rim in a 1 piece alloy from VPW with a  15 x 10 and 3 3/8 backspace,

Thanks mate..Yeah i like the deep dish look on the rear. I am going to do mini tubs when i find a good cortina to start with. Done them on a cortina i had 12 yrs ago and modded the frame of the rear seat which took me 20 mins and you wouldn't have known.. I have some convo's that were on another car but they are way too big. They are 15 X 8.5 with 235's and were on the front of my XE ESP. They have got minimal dish. I've got all these ideas already and can't wait to start..

I think they are 7'' and 8'' on the back. I may have to go to 6'' yet but see how we go.

Hi all, Its been a while since i have been on here. I have some up dates on the beast, starting with all the front end has now been done and the back end is nearly finished. we put on the chrome trims for the wheel arch's but they rubbed on the tyres so we went to plan B. which was to go with the stick on type to solve the problem.

Good thinking on the chrome strips man!  :bigthumpup It's near impossible to find the original strips and if you do they are always damadged. Any chance you could post up a clearer shot of them? would like to see them upclose.

Car is looking sexy as too!

yeah sure is. the only rust in the hole car is in the engine bay fire wall and its not that bad. The back right quater has  had a slight hit at some stage but will fix up easy.
