rough idle and accel
« on: October 28, 2009, 07:39:16 PM »

Hi folks, new member here, i have just bought a TE cortina, done 88000 k's original and pristine in and out, serviced regularly. Having trouble with engine tho... Its rough on idle and stalls, and on acceleration is rough, but will do 100k's p/h easily. sounds like it wants to go but something is holding it back...
i would really appreciate any help...
Thanks, Nathan

Hey there,  First of all great choice of model, Your engine problem could be anything but I would first try to find which cylinder/s are giving the problem, This can be done by removing 1 spark plug lead at a time (with engine running) and see which cylinder/s dont cause it to run worse. Once you have found the porblem cylinder/s you can then start triing to find the problem. start by checking for spark,(just remove the spark plug lead from that cylinder place a screw driver into the end of the lead and hold the shaft of the screw driver about 5-10mm from rocker cover and get someone to start the engine you should see spark jump from screw driver to engine) if no spark look at the lead, distributer cap ,rotor button ,coil ,points and condenser. If you have spark chech for an air leak at manifold at that cylinder, easily cheched by spraying carby clean around manifold gasket if engine runs better while your spraying in that area you have an air leak.
Hope this helps.
