Fitting a TE 4cyl bonnet to a 6cyl
« on: September 22, 2011, 03:46:06 PM »

The 4cyl by all indications is almost the same as the 6cyl save for the bump, with the 6 cyl bonnets incredibly difficult to find, is their a way to modify the bonnets to fit.

They 6 bolts straight onto the 4 so I figure the 4's bolts are all the same and the retention assembly on the front is so all I have to work out is how to make a hump or perhaps put a scoop on it.

Just looking for some feedback this is my first rodeo so I'm not to familiar with cars. I thought of cutting a hole out where the air box is but my father thinks this may now be illegal (unroadworthy) in qld.

I'd appreciate any feedback or alternate methods for fixing this issue I have a bonnet currently but it is quite rusty and it has been bashed in at the front and my panel beating skills are non existent.

Oh well wiki (not reliable I know) reckons the 6cyls had a small hump running down the guts it was cosmetic of the tc/td but was required for the air filter to fit on the TE. mine had the small hump maybe a 1cm rise and it worries me that the 4cyl one won't fit.

I went to a wreckers and the guy was adamant to the point of being rude it was no good whilst the others I rang said they'd be fine, and I can get a real nice looking one for ~160. with a air scoop from autobarn for ~160-80 or off eBay for whatever they go for. assuming it is at all necessary.

Most of my searching is pretty fruitless with this forum seeming to be the best source of information for all things cortina so before I lay down the $$$ I was seeking clarification, I am hoping to spend less than 2 grand getting this baby on the road.

As for the rodeo part it is an expression "this isn't my first rodeo" I meant this is my first experience with a car doing another other than routine maintenance (Fluids Filter lights brakes etc.)

Ive always been a bike guy but a mate had this corty cheap and I quite like the body shape and thought I'd give her a go. I think I am now hooked.

Hi chunky, i know what you're talking about. All the Australian bonnets for the TE (4 and 6) are the same. The wiki is referring to the difference between english and australian bonnets. A friend had an english mk IV, and when you park an aussie TE next to it you can see that the Aussie bonnet does sit a tad higher for the air filter.

So long story short, either bonnet will fit, the wiki is talking english vs aussie, not 4 vs 6.

Appreciate the help guys this was the only component I was having real trouble with and another member who I am buying some stuff cleared my other queries and dramas up I look forward to documenting the build and posting the finished product. Hopefully before Christmas but it's best to hope but not get your heart set on anything I hear.
