Radio Suppression
« on: January 11, 2015, 05:34:53 PM »

I have fitted a Pioneer CD RADIO USB head unit with all new speakers as the car had nothing at all installed !
1980 TE 2.0 OHC
Sounds great with motor off, once started its terrible, its the worst i have ever heard.
Interference is killing sound ON iPod and CD, Radio is not used as no aerial is fitted.
it sounds like an ignition interference rather than alternator as its not speeding up when raving motor.
Checked all connections, power, earth etc. made sure all the cables are insulated and not running next to other power leads etc.
Power is fed direct from Battery and Earth is now also at battery.
I had a Clarion Radio Tape deck here so swapped that in and the problem went away !
so i tried another Kenwood CD player and the same fault came back !
Have run quality power lead to battery and earth lead direct to battery.
Fitted a condensor to alternator and still terrible.
Heater fan indicators etc are not causing a problem.
beginning to think maybe i need to change ignition leads, and probably the cap, rotor and points while I'm at it. its fot me stumped to be honest, just wondered if anyone else has had a similar issue ?

I've done a few installs in the past where engine noise was a major problem. Have you tried wiring power from inside the car splicing into another power source. If you're not running an amplifier there's no real need to run off the battery and you would be better off grounding out to the car rather than the negative terminal. Also there is a bit of a hack where you ground out from the head unit back to the head unit as well which seems to help. I'm not 100% sure how that works but i can find out if it comes to it.

If you live in Sydney I'm more than happy to give you a hand 1 evening. Let me know how you go.

Hi
Thanks for the offer but I'm on Mornington Peninsular Victoria. So a fair trip lol
I had the unit grounded to an earth in the dash that was already used for another item, i moved it after testing the unit, also ran the earth to the main ground on the front slam panel. made no diffrence.
I have run an earth directly from the Head unit casing also to earth but made no difference.
Ill keep plugging away at it at the weekend !
