Reverse cooling a Windsor V8
« on: July 07, 2011, 11:42:34 AM »

Has anybody out there reverse cooled a Ford Windsor V8?. I ;m pretty sure I;ve worked out how to do it and what to use to cool it properly. The only problem is getting the right water pump. Has anyone got any email contacts for Ford Motorsports in the USA asI need a special length pump with an 8 vane impeller not a stamped steel one.
Regards Shane

that wouldnt be too difficult. the later windsor water pumps run anti clockwise whilst the early ran clockwise. worst case a pulley would have to be machined/modified. water in thru top hose, out thru bottom.

i feel like i'm missing something here.

The reason why you'd want to bother doing this? Coz that's where I am. LOL

the concept of it sorta rings a bell but i cant remember why or how for. i dug thru my archives and found a pic of this engine. the water pump and thermostat have been plated over and there are hoses fitted in the block where there normally arent. i've heard of a mod to delete the water pump and fit a plate so u can do up the front head bolt tighter without cracking the block but i thought that was for boosted applications.  i cant remember where i got the pic or who's engine it is but remember something about him running an electric water pump and the water feeding it at the back of the head and exiting via the block at the front.

this engine doesnt look like a normal backyarder and the setup would be expensive and fiddly. there must be some merit in it.

im pretty sure thats OTD 250, if it is i think that set up is to do with the block being grout filled?
does reverse cooling make any difference or does it just mean the block gets all the hotter coolant instead of the heads? i have an alloy radiator, huge thermo, electric water pump, custom timing cover etc etc and i cant keep the windsor in my car cool.

Half grouted ( by memory but could be wrong) and i have a very similar setup but mine is purely to only ever have an alt running with nothing else to sap power.
