NEW dash lenses for TD Cortinas
« on: August 05, 2011, 04:15:11 PM »

Some years ago I made up a new lense cover for the main instrument panel in my TD Cortina. Since the tear down for this re-build I have lost the lense, but I did find all of the plastic sheeting that I used to make the new one with.
I recently bought a second hand lense cover from a car owned , truly, by a little old lady and when you look through it at the right angle it looks fine. When you look at a different angle you can see what appears to be thousands of little water marks which will not rub or polish out.
This will I think be more of a problem when I install my new main cluster gauges as they will all, except for the clock, have LED lighting. So I'm going to make a new lense cover the way I did it before, bent slowly in the oven. This time however I am going to machine up 2 pieces of thick wood that will be machined to fit the exact contour of the lense cover, one negative and one positive. Clamped together with g-clamps I will then be able to very slowly bend the plastic into perfect shape and then let it cool down with the clamps still on.I am sure that this will give me an even better result than before, so if any of you want a new lense cover for your main instrument panel let me know and I'll take orders.God knows what it will cost, but it wouldn'tbe much.I also don't know if the lenses from later models such as the TE and TF etc can be done like this, if they're flat with a curve like the TD then they too are probably doable as well.
I have posted some photos of the original lense from my car and the one from the little old ladys car as well as one of a piece of new plastic in my album in the gallery titled fmd.
Regards,
Shane

hey mate, I put a lense cover from a td onto my te instrument panel recently. the only difference was the position of the hole for the trip meter reset button. You can put me down for a new one when you make them up, just pm me a price when you figure it out.
Cheers, Dave.

you can buy them brand new for a f100-350 and they use the exact same cluster as a cortina
