WANTED HELP/CORTINA/TURBO
« on: August 08, 2011, 11:06:48 PM »

After abit of advice fellas just wondering if any of you know of any cortinas for sale in Perth for under 3 grand with a 250 manual.  There is one in the quokka for 1700 which is a TE GHIA but unlicensed and I assume these cars are a mission to pit.

Next I would like to know what is required to turbo a carby fed 250 xflow because I am still a little uncertain of how a turbo carby works.  So if you know of any turbo kits amongst you that can bolt on please let me know.

Will 3 Grand be able to get close to a running turbo 250?

I found this one and emailed him about all the parts included.
http://wa.gumtree.com.au/c-Cars-Vehicles-Motorbikes-Parts-parts-accessories-engine-engine-parts-transmission-250-X-flow-T04-garrett-turbo-complete-top-end-W0QQAdIdZ299120756

He said:

"The turbo consists of

- T04 Garrett turbo (recond)

- SU carby (new)

- Spacer plate

- Cam to suit (new)

- Lifters to suit

- Exhaust manifold

- Intake manifold

- Complete head

- Not sure if there is a waste gate but will have a look when i can.

This set up was already on a motor when we brought it, we have only done a handful of laps on race track and couldn't figure it out. The pressure we are not 100% sure on, but there is paper work for it just got to find it and think it tells me how much it does push. How much power ill would not know."

So all in all:

1.Know of any cortinas for sale
2.How does a carby turbo work/what do I need to get a 250 turbo running
3.How does that kit sound
4.Budget for a running setup

Sorry if this has already been covered but am still abit in the dark.

Cheers,
Mitch

1. if u found a licensed cortina in perth for 3K it'd be a shitbox. i only check the quokka every few weeks and i havent seen a decent cortina for sale in yonks.

2. plenty of ppl have had a lot of success with carbed turbo engines. it works exactly the same as injected or lpg, u force air in and carby mixes in the fuel. how they exactly work depends on where the carby is? before or after the turbo.

3. if its complete and the real deal then it might be ok. u'd have to have a look at it. if its complete and a straight bolt on then it could save u a lot of hassle.

4. how much do you wanna spend? it's not enough.

I took my car over the pits a year ago, a TD cortina, and i had no real issues, just got pinged for a coulpe of suspension rubbers and the steering rack so i replaced/reconed what had to be done and got it over the second time. That was in welshpool, they seem ok there.
In regard to prices of cortina's Norm, what are they worth these days? Sounds like i'm driving a gold mine around haha

they're worth about $70 in scrap metal but ppl pay more for them. within the last 12 months i know of an unlicensed tc xle which sold for 5, a 4cyl td sedan full of half finished " gunna do" mods and riddled with rust sell for $3800. there was that unlicensed td in maddington, same again "unfinished" which sold for 3.

bodywise the tc was 9.5 out of 10. engine was ok but not mint. interior was pretty average though; drivers seat torn, everything cracked and faded and hoodlining needed redoing. was a good buy for someone but i would've been stretched to pay that much for it.
