AVO Coil Overs
« on: July 04, 2007, 08:48:10 PM »

Has anyone had any experience with or seen the AVO coilovers for the TE Cortina?

AVO make coil overs for the car but I am having trouble working out how they support them off the lower A-arm as the normal shock is held in there with a couplle of 10 mm bolts, which I figure are way to weak  to support the springs and shocks.

I am a bit suss that these are actually designed for the kit cars that use Cortina''s as a base and probably have a different set up.

They still use those saem two bolts with the tee bolt across the bottom eyelet.

You might think the spring would add a lot of load but in fact shock absorber loads are generally higher that spring loads especially when you hit a sharp bump at speed.

Those two bolts were originally designed to withstand the force of the shock hitting the bump stops also and that is the highest force of all.

Mustang front ends have the same type of bottom connection and there are hundreds of coilover kits for them out there working the same way.

Do these coilovers run seperate springs for the standard rear and use a perch to adjust the height?

The ones Tim9 is referring too are front coilovers.  AVO make them to suit euro Cortinas and you can get them over here for about $300 each + springs.  I never did get confirmation that the tee bar mount on the bottom of the euro ones were they same but The Shock Absorber Reconditioners enquired about them for me and assured me they would fit.

They are externally adjustable but the adjustment does both bump and rebound on the same knob.

Hmmmm....

I guess when you think about it other coil-overs have one big bolt around 15 mm in diameter where this is 2 x 10 mm.

I am still a bit nervous about trusting them with my life.

I might have a bit more of a chat to AVO.

They have been abit evasive when I have emailed them and can't even provide me with a photo of them.

Have you been contacting AVO UK directly?  The local suppliers won't be able to help you much.

Their website is really hard to find but here is the link to the Catalogue page:

http://www.avouk.com/pm/89

TE259 is the part number for the front adjustable shocks, I noticed it is also the same for the Granada version.  That may well make it something closer to an XD falcon shock which has a similar mounting on the bottom but is a narrower T bar as far as I know.  They should be able to give you the distance between the bolt hols in the T bar though.

There is definately no worries about the two bolts holding the load.  Dynamic shock absorber loads are way higher than the spring loads.

I am pretty sure when I emailed them about the shocks they came back saying TE259 only get you the shocks and you have the request the coilover kit which costs extra.  They then come with the threaded collar and spring platform etc on the shock body.

I have been emailing AVO direct, this was about 6 months ago and it was about the TE259 shocks.

The story seemed to be that these were orientated towards kit cars that were used on track days.

The catch is that these Cortina based kit cars often run a different lower control arm (possibly reinforced or just stronger).

I asked AVO if they were meant just for kit cars with a different lower control arm and they didn't seem too sure (this is why I asked them for a photo).

It looks as though I will have to do some more research.

However there is a company around Sutherland Sydney that deals in Cortina based kit car parts who may be able to help to work this out.

Either way sounds like I would have to get an engineer to OK it to be registered in NSW.

Thanks

When I had my corolla engineered, I asked him to add in the coilover adjustable struts.  He said they don;t matter because there is no rules saying they are a mod that needs to be engineering.  He admitted that mod was a bit of a loophole that wasn't covered in the rules very well so they are a mod you can do without engineering up here unless the rules have changed in the past couple of years.
