having a few fuel issues in black betty so i decided it needs a bit of a fuel system upgrade in that installingg a surge tank and a bigger pump. located a tank on ebay and bought a bosch 044 as i cant find my stash in the shed. this was a about 6 months ago and due to life circumstances and lots of cbf moments i finally got around to it yesterday

all i had to do was fit the surge tank, reroute and replace 4 fuel hoses at the back of the car, run a couple of wires from the other fuel pump in the boot and we're sweet. expected duration:2hrs max. thats when it all turned to shit.

first the mounting bracket for the surge tank was a little bit on the piss so with little effort i straightened it and it snapped. fixed that, mounted the surge tank. marked where i wanted the fuel lines to run thru the boot floor, climb down in to the pit and check underneath. not gonna work, too much stuff in the way. mark where it will work from underneath. climb up top and yeah it'll work, wont be the prettiest but whatever. drill the pilot holes for the fittings and the drill wont fit in there with a 9/16th bit so i had to make the holes bigger wiuth a die grinder. ever been in a boot with a die grinder going? million other places i'd rather be.

got the fittings bolted up and tight and figured now its just a few minor things and we're cooking. start routing hoses under the car and modifying fuel lines and when i go to put the new hose onto the return fitting of the tank i hear a crack. grab a light and a mirror and sure enough the fitting has cracked where it's welded to the tank. gonna take more than that to beat me. drop the tank out, defume it and proceed to braze the fitting. the second heat went near it, the metal just melted away like it was tin foil. tank is rusted right out grrr

i normally throw fuel tanks out as i've never needed or sold one. 4 wrecks i have here and not one of them has a suitable fuel tank so i have to go on the scrounge and beg.

i shoulda just left it with a fuel surge and i havent even done any of the plumbing or wiring inside the boot yet.

i think this is why cortina owners drink

Fair enough, would the tank out of my TF be any help to you? I'm not going to use it anyway.

Hay norm what's your  recipe to " defume" a fuel tank? IV considered welding tanks before but are worried I'd blow myself up.

the proper way is to fill it with liquid nitrogen and i've also seen ppl do it by connecting a hose from the filler to an exhaust pipe on a car and leave it idling running the gasses thru it for a couple hours.

i did it by completely draining it. filled it with water, rinse out. i put the part i wanted to weld on the very top and refilled the tank with water so it was about 10mm from the top leaving only the tiniest of air gaps but enough that the water wouldnt cool my weld. when i'm done i use metho to get the last traces of water out.

i trhink tils has another way.

Thanks norm, the water way is what I've mostly read about and would use to attempt it. Never had it confirmed that it works, gives me some confidence to trying it.
Tils, feel free to post your method as I would like to hear it.

Thanks guys.
Tils compressed air running through it, I'm worried it may contribute to a big bang, wait did I read that right.

The idea is that all the vapor is pushed out of the tank, never getting the opportunity to accumulate to such an extent that there is enough to contribute to an explosion.
