Stripping body paint
« on: February 08, 2012, 12:51:27 AM »

Hey guys im stripping my paint coz its shit and needs a new paint job, using my grinder and a strip it disk made by brumby, im doing it back to bare metal, iv never done this before, thought id have a go, then rubbing it back again with 60 then 80 grit with my sander,  Clean then fix any rust and dents etc then sanding again with 120 grit, then clean it down good with wax and grease remover, then etch priming, im doing panel by panel coz its my daily driver, whats the best stripping disk to use, this ones ok but im going through them like buggery and took me 4 hrs just to do the boot, i am going slow coz i dont wont to stuff her up, is that normal? Any advice plz, the goals for me is to get to know my corty and craft her as much as i can myself, its what you do if you love these old fords, get rid of all the rust dents etc, remove all the crappy old paint, leave it in primer ready for either pro  to finish the final paint or i get brave and edumecated and buy all the bits i need and do it myself, colour will be tango orange  :drive: What do yous rekn?

use chemical stripper to an inch of the edge of the panel, then cover with glad wrap. Leave for a few hours, hit it with a paint scraper. wipe away residue with rag. Wash. Try not to let it get into blind panels, coz when it comes painting time it can be a cunt. Quicker than a rub back...

what tils said. also with the final sand go to 180 or 240. 120 might be a bit course and deep grooves to fill.

Sorry might sound dumb but just making sure, is a blind panel a section of the panel you cannot see? Ie where two panels are joined, so im guessing it would be a bad idead to do the underneath of the bonnet, hood etc this way, im guessing that cos you need to remove the stripper completly before painting right? So that bit will need sanding? Also its not getting painted final colour for a while, so its going to be sitting in primer, is there anything else i could cover the primer over with,Im going with acrylic

a blnd panel is anything u can see all of it so yeah under the bonnet is tricky around all the braces and the edges. i'd recommend if using stripper to still give it a quick sand with 180-240 bare metal so the etch primer has something to grab onto.

just one thing to be aware of, acrylic primer is porous so if u leave it in primer too long long the metal underneath will rust.

if u acid etch it first u'll get a few weeks out of it but there is probably a product on the market now which isnt porous. technology changes everyday. if not the only thing i'm lead to beleive u can do to seal it is paint it

Guys, any particular chemical stripper you prefer? As a chippie I use just a normal everyday selleys or whatever - only ever used on timber though... I assume it is no different for metal?

Careful with the plastic bits... they hate the strippers.
