Ba turbo cortina
« on: April 13, 2012, 05:14:26 PM »

Hey guys,
My name is frank u all prob have realized I'm new to this forum lol.. Ive just bought myself a te cortina ghia 6 cylinder.. In the process of selling my current car and then wanting to resto the corty.. Just after some advice on these cars on what the biggest tyre these cars can run without mini tubbs? I know speedy diffs run a small slick but I'm not sure if it's mini tubbed or not..
I'm wanting to put Ba turbo running gear in it with a turbo 400 box..

235 will just about take you to the limit. 245 with the right offset but u wont be able to put any mates in it without guard rub

It will be a major pain to build. And if you can't do the fab work yourself, it's going to cost you some serious coin. If you look over my thread in General, there is some real head fuckery involved. But don't let that stop you doing it... LOL

Thanks Guys for the replys.. Building the car isn't gonna be a problem, fitting the engine and box is a little time consuming but nothing I can't handle.. I've been looking into getting the diff housing shortened and lipping the quarters and I think I might be able to squeeze a 26x10.5/15 (255/50/15 under there.. But at the same time I don't want to have it sitting like a wheel barrow..  I'm not planning on taking passengers in the back seat because all my mates are fat cunts like  me and I don't want to slow the car down.. I'm just sick of trying to get my Ba to move being so heavy I just thought a corty will do the trick being so light.. And u don't need a big tyre just the right setup.. The best I've gotten out of my xr6 is 10.71@129mph.. That's a low 10 in a cortina maybe hi 9

Sweet.  I'll be able to get some tips from you when I go to do it, what's your idea with the sump? I was thinking of making one out of sheet metal, but then I read somewhere that the sump adds structural strength to the motor, so sum sort or brace would have to be made for that idea.

5 of the 7 main caps are 4 bolt mains so u'll need to modify an existing sump to maintain that. if u wanna run the gauntlet and lose that integrity and go a sheetmetal sump, a 250 crossflow sump has the exact same bolt pattern as a ba sump pan and would bolt to a ba block if not for the oil pump.

hey rips, why not minitub?  i think u'll find that the sidewall bulge of a 255 might give u grief. minitubbing takes half the ability of the work required to fit a dohc engine and modify the tunnel to take a th400.

just one bit i found also, go with a fg engine. whilst still needing modification they already have the sump bowl at the rear and with that comes a rear mounted dipstick. an fg sump isnt compatible with a ba block.

Cheers norm
Had the same problem with my crossflow, oil pump bottomed out on the sump before it mated to the block, is the pump still in the same spot as a crossflow?
Could the fg sump have the holes filled then redrilled to suit the BA block pattern or is it shaped differently?

nah the oil pump is in the timing cover on a dohc engine. the fg and ba sump are same bolt pattern but a different shape to accomodate the dipstick.

I'm a s.a. guy so rule of thumb is ..........do what you want!  Till you get defected, Then change the Id plates. ;):

in s.a. its ok to swap motors but not to modify  them, as far as I'm aware. Pre 1974 motors can be modified, or somewhere around there.

As far as SA is concerned, if you follow regulations you can pretty much do what you want. This was advice given me from Tonkin Engineers (in SA). If you plan to do something, consult them and go by the book of what they say. If you were to have an accident and the mod wasn't approved, you are going to cop it hard, likewise if they have signed off on it, they will be reamed til kingdom come. As such having something properly engineered has its advantages, the only disadvantage as I see it is cost but only on a short term basis. Worst case scenario is it would be the cheapest. (if you catch my drift...) ;)
