Wiring ignition coil (which wires go where)
« on: January 14, 2013, 10:51:24 PM »

I have a 1971 TC Cortina with the 2.0 pinto engine.  I want to know what wires go where when wiring in the ignition coil.  Just have a heap of wires leading to nowhere and want to start from scratch and do it right.  Thanks

red/green is the ignition coil +ve, -ve side of the coil runs the the distirbutor. red/blue is starter motor, brown/blue is ballast bypass, red/white goes to oil pressure, white/red goes to temp. that should get your engine running.

Thanks for the prompt reply BigNorm.  Have a few wires which don't match the colours you mentioned.  The only one I have connected is the red/white wire leading to temp sensor.

Is there anyone who lives near Templestowe VIC and knows how to wire a coil into a 2.0 pinto Mk3 Cortina.
It would be a good chance for me to meet a fellow member face to face and talk cars :)  Thanks

sorry dont know how i missed your post with the photos. the +ve side of the coil will have two balck/yellow trace wires going to it. one from the key, the other from the 2nd terminal of the starter motor. -ve side of the coil connects to the distributor.

prob make it easier to know where in the engine bay that photo was taken but from memory those wires in your hand are from left to right;
red x 2 - few ways these can go but commonly both go to the alternator. the bigger one connects from there to the battery, smaller one to the regulator.
blue  - alternator/charge light on the instrument cluster.
black/pink? - looks like pink in the photo. if so then no idea. if its black/purple then it connects to the wiper motor.
yellow - low beam
black - F terminal alternator
brown - earth
red - the silver trace throws me but it looks like a jelly wire. give the wire a wiggle, does it feel like a normal wire or does it spring back to its original shape? if its a jelly wire then it goes to the +ve coil.

the green/yellow wire to the starter looks like someone has used domestic wiring to sort something out.

these are only from memory, take a much bigger photo to show me where in the engine bay u took that photo holding the wires

All fixed BigNorm.  Thanks again for all your help.  Spent a good 3hrs tonight identifying all the wires.  Hooked everything up and turned the key.....and it produced a strong spark on all 4cyl.

My next step is to drain the tank of all the stale fuel get the car started and hopefully get it on club registration within the next few weeks.  Which leads me to my next question..... Does this club have a club registration scheme?

Cheers
