Mk2 Cortina diff to hold 200hp?
« on: January 03, 2015, 05:12:07 PM »

Hi! Looking at the bum of my project trying to figure out what to do. I need a diff to hold 200hp (should only be 160/170 in reality) via an auto. Not many hard launches envisaged, but I would like to put her on the 1/8th mile just once at least. Of course people say "get an rn10 diff" but have you tried finding one of those for a reasonable cost? Any idea if the 'english' can be rebuilt with modern componentry to hold 200? Any ideas of other donors that will require MINIMAL shortening?

Don't take my word ill find the web site I read it on but I'm sure I read BorgWarner 8" 6cyl falcon diff parts can be used in the mk2 diff . I'm sure that's what it said but don't hold me to it

Now that would be an awesome fix.
:) Will start googling too - if I find it I'll post it.

Don't think the internals will interchange from mk2 to falcon, tc to te can interchange with falcon.

Here's an idea using a te diff, with out looking at a mk2 and having a go myself I can't say it will definitely work.
some quick measurements , your diff would need to be a minimum of 190mm to 200mm shorter then the te diff for this to work.
The overall length of the te diff is about 1507mm,  subtract your diff length.

As you can see why it needs to have the minimum of about 95mm to 100mm off each side. You need to get into the thicker section of the axle to respline it, the te axle is 25 spline. The axle on the left in the picture is out of a td and wouldn't be able to have this done to it because of how it is cast. Axle on right is r31skyline so irreverent.

Depending on what ratio you want to run tc to te 4cyl wagon diff  is a 3.7 ratio, the other 4cyl ratio is 3.5.
On a side note r31 pintara has a 4.11 and r31skyline have 3.9 and can be swapped into the te housing but you need to use all the internals from r31, the skyline is a 28 spline so that brings more work to change the spider gears, pintara is 25 spline. If swapping to r31 gears any te diff would be fine.

Obviously you would need to cut off the te mounts and weld the mk2 mounts to fit it, shorten the housing, have the axles resplined. I'd say you would probably need to have the tail shaft modified too.

LSD's can be put into the te housing from falcons, r31, commos, but not all are 25 spline,  and not all drop straight in.

Hmmm...will have to pull the wheels and do some measurements. Food for thought - Thanks :)

Im doing my mk2 cortina diff at the moment after I smashed the planetry gears in the english diff, so what I have done so far is buy a borg warner diff out of a vp commodore tohave the housing and axels shortened to fit under the bum of the car, you have to watch out for what borg warner you buy as some are 25 spline and 28 spline aswell as how many center pins wth either two or four, im doing my setup with the commodore rear brakes aswell as handbrakes assembly

How much will they have to lop off the axles to fit that under? I thought you could only shorten an axle by so much due to the case hardening....?

Im not sure what the measurement is but because I know I needed two long axles and just not the usual cut down the longer side of he housing aswell as cut down the longer axle because the pinion in the original diff runs pretty much straight down the middle of the car so where as the commodore diff is offset a fair bit to the left, it shouldnt matter about the case hardening because you can always re case harden further down the axle

Cool. My prevuious cars were all bolt-on mods. This business of chopping stuff up is new to me. Big Learning Curve. :)

I destroyed 2 mk2 centres & axles after working the 2 litre in my mk2 doing burnouts. Ended u getting a 28 spline  Commodore LSD modified with Torana Brakes. Works a treat.
