How to ID a collapsable column?
« on: January 06, 2015, 03:29:26 PM »

Hi again,
Planning is going well for the Mk2 + Rover v8. My understanding is that the late export (to Oz) MK2's had a collapsible steering column. Can anyone confirm this and how I tell if my collumn is collapsible? What ADR would that be under?

I haven't had anything to do with mk2s so I know nothing but...

If the column is collapsible the center shaft should be 2 piece.
To check this you would have to undo the coupling on the steering box and see if the lower section will slide up closer to the firewall, it may take force being so old to move it up at all.
From memory the xw xy falcon columns were corrugated looking under the dash, I believe that was the part of the outer casing that collapsed, so could be a sign that yours is collapsible if it has that corrugated section .
Visually if there's no coupling I'd say it's not collapsible

I STILL haven't had a chance to get into the shed and pull apart the column. BUT I did check the ADR's and as the ADR's for collapsible columns 10A came in Jan71. So a 6/71 Cortina should, by rights, have a collapsible column! :)

its hard to tell from that photo whether or not its collapsible. the part of the column which is actually collapsible is the part between the firewall and the mounting at the top.

I'll have to have a look when I get into the shed next. Seems like everything's getting in the way at the moment!
