Te cortina windsor efi conversion
« on: January 15, 2016, 04:47:46 PM »

Hello,

I've owned my cortina for 10 years and keeped it very tidy neat and basic but always wanted to do a windsor conversion and the time has come. I bought a complete 96 fairlane and using the 5L to go in. gearbox to be used is the factory 4spd toploader. About to purchase the parts. Far as i know all i need is the bellhousing for efi to toploader, engine mounts and sump. All these are available on Rodshop.com.au (is there another place to buy these things at a good price? each item about $500 each). Brake upgrade is covered already.

Has anyone done a similar job before? is there anything i have missed parts wise and any dramas that i may run into?

Where is the best place for the computer to go?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Hi BTFL
I'd be double checking if you TE has a toploader as they didn't come out with toploaders, from factory the TE had the Borg Warner 4 speed

Something else to look at is the clutch. Your Corty will have a cable, I'm not familiar with the CRS bell housings, it could be made to use  hydraulic operated clutch and not a cable. So something else to look at.

Hi Winton,

Yea bloke i bought it off owned it from new. He said he put it in when he did the engine change over to a reconditioned engine. It a te ghia with electric sunroof and power steering too. I've never seen or heard of another cortina like it, very nice to drive.

Ok sweet ill look into that before i  order it. Father in law is helping with install and said we maybe able to use the current bellhousing. Ive heard a rumor that the 250 crossflow engine had the same bell housing pattern as the Windsors anyway?

Hi BTFL
Most computers get mounted on the inner passenger wheel wheel even on factory cars.
Fairly sure the xflow and windsor bellhousing mounting points are different. But a windsor and a cleveland bellhousing are the same if thats what you heard.

^^ yeah the bells are different. You could also be thinking about using the c4 behind a 6. You can use the Windsor stall converter on the six. You can also use the flexplate but you have to cut off the counter weights. So you could bolt the flywheel from the 250 onto the Windsor but there is no counter weight on the 250 flywheel. If you did that I'd say the first issue you would have is the bolts will come loose on the flywheel.

early 250's were imperiel whereas the later metric. the flywheel bolts were either 7/16th or 10mm. there is also a stepped bolt that ford did to overcome the imperiel flywheel on a metric crank. i have some somewhere. i'll dig them out and give the part number.

i thought only the manuals came loose

I Haven had much experience with Windsor's but I would think with out the counter weight it would put out some bad vibrations causing them to loosen . I've had a few flex plates come loose on 250's

a 250 is internally balanced via the crank and a v8 externally balanced via the flew plate hence the weight on the flexplate. it simple, remove the big weight from the flex plate and if you get really excited get it neutrally balanced just in case.

today's tip: dont use veem in perth to balance it. they seem to struggle with the concept.
