A manual cortina top loader gearbox is prolly what u are after, very sought after and rare but worth it if the old borgy box becomes a drama.
If an auto is more your liking, look for a toughened c4.

If you drag race your car or start messing with big cams, get a auto for sure.

Like bucster said, the C4 is the easiest & most cost effective option.

Are the gear levers on the outside of the gearbox{toploader} or is it a gear stick that goes into the rear extension housing of the gearbox{borg warner}.

It would take a bit of abuse and power to break a toploader.

they bolted toploaders behind clevelands. they're a strong box so if u'r mate was chewing them up he was either making 500+bwhp or abusing them or both.

only common street pupose box i could think which might be stronger would be a muncie but u might have issues getting it to mate to a 250.

there's a toploader on ebay at the mo for $800 with cortina linkages. i've got a 250/toploader bellhousing if u need it.
