C4 is the go for sure.  Thery are lighter and sap a lot less power out of the engine.  A properly built C4 can handle 1000hp no worries also so there is no need to go to the bulkier box.

In fact the weak points of the bigger C6 box are actually weaker than a C4.

C4 also fits straight into a Cortina without any dramas and they are commonly used behind the Cleveland.  Make sure you get a post 1970 model C4 box.  Some people will refer to the post 1970 C4 fitted to V8 as a C10.

Also watch out you don't get a windsor box as they have a different bellhousing. The C4, C9 and C10 boxes arer all essentially clased as C4 boxes and only have minor differences internally and different cases and bellhousings.

If you want to learn more here are some links to pics of the 6 cylinder (C9) box I built for my turbo engine.

Also here is a link to the best gearbox tech forums known to man and it is all realting to the C4 trans.  Read up here and you will be able to keep any gearbox shop honest when they try to tell you that transmission mods are a black art as they would like you to believe.

Start off with the two sticky threads at the tops of the page before you buy anything.

Finally I suggest buying the Haynes Manual - Ford Automatic Transmission Overhaul (Haynes manual No 10355)  Drysdales Bookstore in Brisbane stocked it a couple of years ago.

A Gasket Seal Ring (GSR) kit for the C4 cost a bit over $100 and with that manual and some patience you can do a basic freshen up yourself.
