gidday from across the ditch!
« on: February 16, 2009, 10:32:22 AM »

gidday, I'm jase and from new zealand, and i have previously brought my self a 1979 mk4 cortina for $550.
the body is prity strait, it had some rust but the previous owner fixed that.
I blew the diff not long ago but have since then replaced it.
the old 2l soc engine is about to die, so i am currently looking for a replacement for that, I have been looking at the zetec 2l engines, as they are reasonably cheap and they are from many vehicles.
They also sound like a reasonably good engine?
I was talking to a guy at the ford wreckers and he suggested a 2l sierra engine with the 5spd box, he said the engine numbers but i cant remember what they were, he quoted me $350 for one so i got him to look arround for me.
Also wanting to convert to 5stud all round, and disk brakes.
Im also getting the rear wheels widend 20-25mm each side of the wheels on the rear.

any way thats a bit about my plans for this pos, and any info on these mods would be grate!

Thanks
Jase

Hi Jase,
Welcome to the website, your ideas sound interesting.
I dont know much about the Zetec motor, except i thought they were east west.
Regarding the sierra motor, are you going to leave it Normally Aspirated.
The Turbo version has tremendous horsepower and was almost indestructible. The 5 stud front brake conversion always helps when you consider a motor upgrade or horsepower increase. Regarding the disc rear, looks good but not always neccessary.
Also have a look under the wheel arch and measure the clearence before you decide on what size to widen the rims, if you are going to change to 5 stud you might find a set of wide falcon rims cheaper than getting the old ones widened.
Try and set up an album in the gallery section and upload some pics, give us a look at the project and how you are progressing, keep it updated and ask any questions when you need a hand.

Cheers

yeap there a front wheel drive engine, but i know a few people who make bellhouseing's so it should'nt be to hard, however i have just found a doc sierra 5speed for $300 so i think i am going to get that!

A turbo'd sierra engine is extreamly hard to come by over here, so makes things a bit more difficult.
i have a turbo off an sr20det engine, and a turbo off an 7mgte toyota supra motor, im not to sure what one to use at the moment, any suggestions would be grate thanks.

Will keep you guys updated and upload some pictures some time soon!.

cheers jase.
