What gearbox?
« on: February 16, 2009, 01:58:12 PM »

Hi guys,
I'm just about to put an XF injected 250 Turbo motor in my TD 3.3 Auto. The XF motor has a 4 speed manual BW box, I want to go with manual but want a 5 speed. Running about 350hp (for road use only) what 5 speed would be an easy conversion, cost effective and survive with this combo.
Should I stick with the 4 Speed?
Any help will be appreciated

there isnt a cost-effective gearbox which will handle 350hp thru overdrive. the single rail wont last either. a toploader will handle the hp but doesnt have overdrive. otherwise u might need to up your budget.

ok, what should I up the budget to?
Has anyone tried fitting the Sierra cosworth 5 Speed to a crossflow? Externally they look the same as the BW-T50D used in some of the later XF's (so the gregory's manual says). I used one in my MK1 Escort drag car behind a 450hp Cosworth engine I did break it but only once I got to using the nitrous. Broke the engine a few times as well. I can get my hands on a Cosworth gearbox from UK but don't know if I can get it to fit.

You can get a T5 from Redline Auto that has had the standard gears replaced. Last time i looked into it they wanted $2500 for one.

i doubt a sierra box would handle the torque of a  turbo 250.  if its the same as an xf box then it definitely wont cos they were shit.
