Timing problem
« on: May 25, 2009, 05:41:20 AM »

Hi
i have a 250 crossflow out of an xf in my tf problem is with the timing you set the timing on what it should be and after about 5 mins of driving it advances itself so when you come to a stop it idles rough and take off is terrible have adjusted it several times to no avail.
Could this be a a vaccum problem or timing chain?
Or is it the distributor that is the problem ?
Thanks
Trev

Sounds like something binding the vacuum advance when it expands under heat.  Try a thorough clean and then check for any stickiness in the advance plate and the vacuum unit.

Also check that the vacuum to the distributor is being released on idle.  You may have a blockage or a faulty valve that holds the vacuum and releases it slowly as you come back to idle. Part of the emissions control on some crossflows.

If there is any rubbing, use a whetstone to relieve the areas that touch if you cannot locate a damaged component.

With the vacuum unit, it it doesn't have smooth movement, replace it. Better still, get another distributor from the wreckers.

Hope this is some food for thought.

But it has solved the original problem
