Building a cortina. Might not be in street machine... :P
« Reply #90 on: August 19, 2011, 06:21:17 PM »

So I started (and finished :P ) the tank mods today so that it would take the factory ford intank pump and sender unit.

Before this happened, I dropped the tank and found out there was at least 2L of fuel still in there! The car has been sitting in the yard for about 15 years!!!

When I got it out it stank like an evil version of turps and was the colour of rusty water... So, of course... I put it in an old drum stuck some old rope in as a wick, and lit it up... as you do.

It was pure death. It stank more as it burned and the smoke was a lovely rich black. :/

Anyway, with that gone I washed the tank out and let it dry in the sun for a few days with a fan being funneled into the sender unit hole.

When I was welding it I had compressed air being forced through the tank to prevent any "unfortunate incidents" LOL

OK. So pics...

The tank after being dried out.

Sender unit flange and cap.

All shaped up with bolts welded on.

Trial fit.

Welded in.

Fitted! :D

I'll run the fuel lines soon then whack the tank back in!!!

thats piss funny. i always get old fuel and lite it up......as ya do. an old trick we used to do in the "we'll weld that up for ya love" days when nobody got hurt and safety didnt matter.....much unlike today. anyway we used to hook up the fuel tank with a hose to an exhaust pipe and pump exhaust fumes thru it for a couple of hours to nuetralise it. carbon monoxide naturally absorbs hydrocarbons apparrantly.

at the end of the day, if u fuck it up and dont degas it properly you'll never know.

And current cost has come up to $1100, not counting grinding discs and mig wire and gas... lol. So you can manage on a shoestring budget! :P

Also knocked up a tail pipe out of the exhaust off the falcon and some off cuts from the local exhaust shop. 2.25"...

The tank is in, like a bought one! LOL

Also finished welding up the tail section for the exhaust. Now it wont be so expensive when the I take it to the exhaust shop. :P

Here are the pics!

Not so pretty but it'll do the job.

Yeah, there is a thread on this site about how to upgrade brakes and change stud pattern to ford 5 stud.

Well I started fitting the wiring into the car and fitted the instrument panel, I'm about 1/3 of the way through it.

I also discovered a very freaky thing about the steering columns of the 2 fords of this project... I'll take some photo's tomorrow for all to see, and what to do... hehehehehe ;)

As promised...

This discovery of mine: Turns out the telescoping sections are virtually the same between the TE Cortina and the EF Falcon...

So I did a little switcharoo. ;) Top of the falcon shaft with the lower section of the Cortina...

Put in...

I then cut the steering shaft tube mounts off the cortina (I welded a rod across to save the hassle of aligning it later) and the adjustable mount off the falcon tube and put them together.

I then cut the end off the cortina tube for the bush and dust seal.

Put in place...

And voila! It fits!! Didn't even cut or bend under the dash!!!

See!

Now I have a 1978 Cortina with drivers airbag, and late model switch gear and key!

If you wanted you could just have used an earlier Falcon steering column with no airbag lol.

Looks good don't you rekon, might have to get a black wheel though... :P
